A beginner to intermediate mixed media course that explores an exciting new technique that mimics encaustic painting. The picture accompanying this text is simply a representation of the class and not the actual projects taught

Are you intrigued by the layers of sweet beauty that encaustic painting offers but intimidated by the process and hesitant to invest in another assortment of art supplies? Or, are you looking to try some new techniques that explore the usage of acrylic mediums? Perhaps you simply want to begin your journey into the mixed media art world. If so, then we invite you to join this delightful online workshop. Students will be led through a fascinating process of mimicking encaustic painting by incorporating acrylic mediums, layers of collage, acrylic paint., and enhanced with light journal writing on stretched canvases.

Students will be provided with videos, still pictures, and written directions to utilize during the work shop. By the end of the course, students will have completed four faux encaustic pieces.

  • Imagination (let go and come explore your creativity!)
  • 4 small canvases   (no smaller than 5 x 5, suggested size 6x6 but you can use what you have)
  • White Gesso
  • Sketch book or drawing paper
  • Tar Gel  Small bottle
  • Glazing medium (I use Golden but Liquitex offers a smaller bottle)
  • Soft Gel Medium Semi Gloss
  • Titan Buff, White and Black Acrylic paint
  • 4 other main colors of acrylic paint (when choosing your 4colors, think in terms of the four seasons.  Perhaps forwinter you associate blue, or maybe  will be using one maincolor per canvas representing each season so explore your memories of each season and choose your colors based on those thoughts)
  • Soft Charcoal Pencil
  • Graphite pencil
  • Fine tip black Pitt Pen  (you can use your favorite black fine tip gel pen if you don’t have any Pitt Pens, however, Pitt pens are wonderful to use over acrylic paint, you won’t be sorry if you buy these)
  • Your favorite script stamp, flourish or fleur de lis stamp
  • Black Staz on Ink pad
  • Variety of papers (choose from your stash of favorite papers, dictionary pages, lyrics, old letters whatever inspires you)
  • Sanding Block or Sand paper
  • Brayer or Credit Card
  • Dressmaking tissue paper (if you don’t have any, go to a
  • thrift store or second hand shop, you can find a variety of pattern paper for 25 cents or less)
  • Medium sized flat paint brush, and two to three small to medium sized paint brushes
  • Pallet knife (credit card will also work but I prefer using a knife)
  • Workable Fixative (krylon)
  • Optional Items to create texture and make marks:
  • Bubble Wrap
  • Drywall Tape Paper Doilies
  • Bottle Caps
  • Embossed Wallpaper
  • Sequin Waste
  • While preparing for this class, students are asked to look around their house to find items they can add texture to their work with things they already have. Be creative!! What else besides the suggested items do you have that will add a funky touch to your work?
  • The list of supplies provided are suggested but not every item is necessary if you are looking to cut costs.  You must have the canvases, tar gel, acrylic paint in titan buff, assorted colors of acrylic paint, gesso, an adhesive, pencil or charcoal pencil, paint brushes and a variety of papers toget the most out of this course.
  • Students will be provided with videos, still pictures, and written directions to utilize during the work shop. Instructor will set up a private flickr group to share photos of your work in progress.  What are you waiting for?  Let’s explore some new and exciting mixed media Techniques!!
